Jared Smith, Former BIT Employee and Current Highway Patrol Officer
Former BIT employee, Jared Smith, is a native of Pierre and son to Paula and David Smith. His father, David, works for BIT as a Technology Engineer for the Data Center.
Jared recently graduated from Law Enforcement Training Academy on July 21st. A total of 20 troopers graduated, making this the largest class since 1974. His training consisted of 10 weeks of basic law enforcement training, 10 weeks of highway patrol training, and two months of in-the-field training. When asked what prompted him to apply to the program, Jared explained:
“I have always been interested in law enforcement and a few of the local highway patrol troopers I know were encouraging me to apply. After partaking in a few ride-alongs with some of the local troopers and talking a little more to some of them- I knew this was the right career choice for me.”
Throughout the training, Jared was equipped with the skills necessary to be an effective trooper. Learning laws and procedures regarding firearms, driving, crash investigation, and DUI detection (to name a few).
David joked, “In his two previous positions with the state, DOT and BIT, Jared was tasked with doing a lot of driving… little did he know this would be preparing him for his future career!”
Currently, Jared is assigned to the Gettsyburg area. If you see him, make sure you wave!
