2014 Summer Internships are Available

The State of South Dakota Intern Program was created to provide opportunities for students to gain first-hand knowledge and understanding of governmental processes through pre-professional work experiences in various occupational fields.

The Intern Program offers internships for students in many areas, some of which include accounting, corrections, education, engineering, fisheries and wildlife, law, marketing, nursing, pharmacy, public relations and information and technology.

Below are the current internship positions available within BIT for the summer 2014 session.

Software Engineer - Pierre - Job ID 2565
Intern will be performing a variety of different tasks to provide hands on software engineering experience. Intern will be provided with an exposure to the overall duties of a software engineer while actively being involved in current project workloads. Some of these projects or tasks may include, assisting in software upgrades and assisting in existing software development projects by performing programming duties.

Software Engineer - Pierre - Job ID 2446
Intern must have a solid understanding of Visual Studio .net, must be familiar with Microsoft SQL database design, possess strong communication skills, and have the self-motivation to work alone and with a team of application developers. Candidates who are specializing in application development are highly encouraged to apply for this summer internship.

Intern will assist with installation/Integration of interactive digital videoconferencing equipment. Duties may include but are not limited to mounting hardware in videoconference rooms, installing software on related equipment, installing and terminating A/V cabling and observing network functions of the states video network as a complete system.

Communications and Social Media - Pierre - Job ID 2682
Intern will work directly with the BIT Communications and Social Media Manager throughout the summer 2014 time period. Principal responsibilities and potential projects include, but are not limited to the following: revisit and attain existing social media policies across state government and provide improvements based on recent trends, provide social media reports and analysis, create content and discussion topics for future state government communicators' meetings, develop weekly news briefings relative to social media strategies and concepts for state government communicators, write articles to use on the BIT blog and newsletter, develop and enhance recruitment videos of selected BIT staff and available positions to use on social media platforms, attend meetings and conduct other relative duties as assigned. Applicant must be a full-time student at a college or university. Preference will be given to those with junior standing or above by the end of the Spring 2014 semester, or who are currently enrolled at a technical institute and have completed one year (nine months) by the start of the internship.

Computer Support - Pierre - Job ID 2681
Intern will be working out of either the Kneip Building or Becker-Hansen Building. Intern will be responsible for installing new or replacement computers, installing emulation software, and upgrading or installing various software in the assigned state agencies. Intern will also assist the assigned team with completing daily work requests related to computer support.

Computer Support - Mitchell - Job ID 2538
Intern will be working out of the Mitchell Support Services office. Intern will be responsible for installing new or replacement computers, installing emulation software, and upgrading or installing various software in the assigned state agencies. Intern will also assist the assigned team with completing daily work requests related to computer support.


Intern will assist with projects and documentation necessary to maintain the state's relevant networks and information systems. Duties to include but not be limited to: network documentation, review and audit of existing systems/databases for accuracy, diagramming and mapping of information systems, policy review and auditing, network device configuration and installation, and assisting with information security tasks and duties. Applicant must be a full-time student at a college or university. Preference will be given to those with junior standing or above by the end of the Spring 2014 semester, or who are currently enrolled at a technical institute and have completed one year (nine months) by the start of the internship.

Broadband Specialist - Pierre - Job ID 2536
Intern will assist the South Dakota Broadband Initiative with activities related to broadband mapping, data collection, and verification. Tasks to include, but not be limited to, performing drive testing of cellular and wireless networks across South Dakota, researching and comparing broadband availability datasets, inspecting collected and licensed data for anomalies. Applicant must be a full-time student at a college or university and have sophomore standing or above by the end of the Spring 2014 semester, or must currently be enrolled at a technical institute and have completed one year (nine months) by the start of the internship.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) - Pierre - Job ID 2533
Intern will assist the South Dakota Broadband Initiative and Bureau of Information and Telecommunications GIS staff with activities related to the improvement and generation of a statewide GIS address file dataset. Duties will include ingestion, extraction, transformation, adjustment, and integration of GIS point data and similar datasets from multiple data sources, as well as the generation of ESRI GIS maps, online mapping applications, and GIS tools and scripts. Applicant must be a full-time student at a college or university. Preference will be given to those with junior standing or above by the end of the Spring 2014 semester, or who are currently enrolled at a technical institute and have completed one year (nine months) by the start of the internship.

Radio/Multi-Media Programming/Production - Vermillion - Job ID 2691
Intern will learn and perform duties equal to those of an entry-level professional producer in a public radio/public media environment; ability to produce and edit audio and/or video for broadcast and web using Adobe Audition, Final Cut Pro or other similar software; ability to assist live talk show producer during "Dakota Midday"'; ability/aptitude to produce and edit radio/multimedia content; basic news judgment; Other duties as assigned. Summer interns are expected to be available to work 40 hours/week. May be required to cover for regular staff during holidays and vacations.
Multi-Media News Reporter/Anchor (multiple positions) - Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Vermillion - Job ID 2689
Intern will learn and perform duties equal to those of an entry-level professional Multi-Media Reporter in a public radio/public media environment; cover and report all kinds of news stories in person, over Internet or over phone; write for broadcast and for web (www.sdpb.org); ability to produce and edit audio and/or video for broadcast and web using Adobe Audition, Final Cut Pro or other similar software; ability to participate in live unscripted questions/answer interview (or "talkback") with show host; host live news programs as needed and as skill level and aptitude allow; possible assignment with professional Radio/TV producers or reporters; basic news judgment. Other duties as assigned. Interns are expected to be available to work 40 hours/week. May be required to cover for regular staff during holidays and vacations.

Marketing - Vermillion - Job ID 2454
Intern will assist with projects related to marketing the activities of South Dakota Public Broadcasting (SDPB). Marketing is responsible for the promotion of programming on SDPB Television and Radio statewide networks, and supporting the activities of the SDPB Education and Online department and SDPB Development's membership acquisition & advocacy group, the Friends of SDPB. Intern will assist with the formation and recruitment for SDPB Volunteer Corps; will assist at events with the SDPB mascot; and assist in the production of materials. Position can be adapted to fit the skills and interests of successful applicant.

Marketing Production - Vermillion - Job ID 2449
Intern will assist with projects related to marketing the activities of South Dakota Public Broadcasting. Marketing is responsible for the promotion of programming on SDPB Television and Radio statewide networks, and supporting the activities of the SDPB Education and Online department and SDPB Development's membership acquisition & advocacy group, the Friends of SDPB. Intern will primarily work on the production of TV and radio promotional announcements. Duties will include script writing, spot production, and working with Continuity and Master Control to ingest spots into playback systems. Intern might also assist in the production of print and online materials and participate at SDPB-sponsored events. Position can be adapted to fit the class schedule of successful applicant.
