Tonight, SDPB TV will air a special one-hour South Dakota Focus at 8pm CT/7pm MT, bringing together George and Linda Mickelson’s three children – Mark, Amy and David – for a live discussion about their father. Others scheduled include Rich Helsper, who was a friend and a business partner of Mickelson in their Brookings law firm before his election, and two people from Mickelson’s state administration, former chief of staff Frank Brost and one of the press secretaries, Janelle Toman.
SDPB TV will follow the live broadcast with a 30-minute documentary Governor George S. Mickelson: In His Own Words. This program will showcase edited clips from various speeches from the former Governor. The excerpts come from SDPB’s archives of inaugural addresses in 1987 and 1991, State of the State speeches to open sessions of the Legislature from 1987 through 1993, and appearances he made on SDPB.
SDPB radio will air Dakota Digests on April 18-19 during both the morning and afternoon newscasts.
SDPB radio will also devote Friday’s Dakota Midday with Host Karl Gehrke to a more personal remembrance of Gov. Mickelson and the others who died in the crash. Many of the dead were leaders of economic development in SD. Guests will discuss how the tragedy affected SD’s economic evolution over the past 20 years.
Finally, one of Gov. Mickelson’s accomplishments was the current Department of Tourism. Confirmed live guests include Chief of Staff Frank Brost, former State Representative, State Senator and Sioux Falls Mayor David Munson, Press Secretary Gretchen Lord Anderson and former Secretary of Tourism Susan Edwards Johnson.
